What is Legacy on the Mountain?

Legacy on the Mountain is a feature-length documentary following the John R. Hayes High Steppin’ Majorettes & Drum Corps over a year, interwoven with the history of Black Asheville. The spirit of a legendary high school band is reborn through a youth majorette and drum corps program in a public housing community. Meet the man whose leadership made it possible and the community efforts in arts, culture, and organizing that helped Black residents survive the loss of a beloved community.

The Lineage: STEPHENS-LEE

Stephens-Lee High School’s marching band set a standard of Black excellence in Asheville, carrying pride and discipline through an era shaped by segregation. That tradition became a foundation other generations would build on.
